The Dam Has Been Plugged

Luxembourg claim Benelux Round 2 to put them in pole position.

The Luxembourg Men’s Championship Side for the day

Last weekend, Saturday, 26 May saw the biggest ever Benelux Gaelic football tournament in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The club performed well in the first tournament of the year in the Hague in March and were looking god for Round 2.
For the first time in many years three teams travelled from Luxembourg to take part in the competition, the men’s championship team, the Shield team and the women’s team.

The men’s competition started well for Luxembourg with the Shield team beating Belgium’s shield team well and the Championship side beating Belgium A. After this good start the Shield team were disappointed to draw with Düsseldorf. The Championship team lost their next round match to hosts Amsterdam. The Shield team were beaten by the host club in the next round but their big victory over Belgium was enough to secure a place in the final. In the Championship Luxembourg beat den Haag to secure their place in the final.

This was a tremendous achievement for the Club, to not only field two men’s teams but to reach the finals of both competitions.

In the Shield final Amsterdam scored an early goal and Luxembourg never managed to make up the difference losing 1-03 to Amsterdam to Luxembourg’s 0-03. The same clubs faced each other in the men’s Championship final. Luxembourg were much more comfortable in this match, a winter’s training paid off with a 2-09 to 1-04 victory over Amsterdam.

Tadhg Dunne, one of three Luxembourg players who played for both the Championship and the Shield team, eight matches on a warm day, was rewarded by the tournament referees with Player of the Tournament for the Championship competition.

Luxembourg are now top of the league table for the Benelux Championship, the next tournament will take place in Belgium on 23 June with the finals taking place in Maastricht on the 28 July.

Lux finish runners-up in Den Haag

Luxembourg Squad March 2012

Saturday saw Luxembourg take part in what was a keenly contested first round of the 2012 Benelux Championship. A fine all-round team performance saw Lux through to the final against the home side. The final was a very tight affair which took extra time to separate the sides.
In the end it was, unfortunately, Den Haag that emerged victorious with a hard earned 1 point victory.

St. Patrick’s Festival 2012

This year all of the Irish associations in Luxembourg have joined forces to organise a very special St Patrick’s Festival 2012 and a colourful and diversified programme of Irish culture and sport has been put together.

The weekend will begin on Friday, 16 March at 19.30 with a St Patrick’s Party at the Sang a Klang in Pfaffenthal.

The following day, Saturday, 17 March (St Patrick’s Day itself), you are invited to experience the Irish sports of Gaelic Football, Hurling and Camogie (Info: http://www.luxgaa.lu) at the Avenir Beggen football stadium in Beggen (free entrance). Young or not-so-young, why not have a try at these games yourselves? Simply bring along your football boots or running shoes.

For the non-sporting among you, there will also be lots of other entertainment: At 14.30 the Cullen Sisters (winners of the All-Ireland Trio 2011), who will travel especially from Ireland for the weekend, will delight all at the stadium in Beggen with their wonderful, traditional Irish music. A traditional Irish Folk Dance will also be performed by the children of the Irish dancing club ‘Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann’ (Info: http://www.comhaltas.lu) at the Club-house in Beggen in the afternoon. Your children are particularly welcome to participate; we want to gather as many children as possible, all dressed in green. The child with the fanciest ‘green’ dress will win a prize!

Another important aspect that can’t be missed that day: the culinary tradition of Ireland, the ‘food island’. There will be a great selection of Irish food, with Guinness and Irish coffees playing a key role.

We are certain that when you visit the stadium in Beggen you will experience an authentic Irish atmosphere.

Later that evening (Saturday 17 March at 20.00), the festivities will continue in the Centre Culturel in Cessange with a ‘Céilí Mór’ and music by the Cullen Sisters. There, you can Irish dance until you drop and everyone can join in the fun.

This Festival is under the patronage of the Irish Ambassador, the ‘Association du Bénévolat’ and the ‘Ville de Luxembourg’ and this event has been organised solely by volunteers with the aim to introduce and share with the Luxembourg public the cultural diversity of Ireland, at this special time in the Irish cultural calendar.

So don’t miss out on this event, keep the weekend of the 17 March free and let us join together to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, the Irish national day.

Those who miss this opportunity can only blame themselves.

Nicola crowned Lux Rose

2011 Rose Aisling McInerney passes the crown on to Nicola

Saturday night saw Camogie and Football player Nicola McEvoy crowned as the 2012 Luxembourg Rose of Tralee at the annual Rose Ball in the Royal Hotel. It was a double win for Lux GAA with Eamonn Dunne fulfilled his boyhood dream by picking up Escort of the Year. “I was absolutely ecstatic” he was quoted as saying.
GSCL wishes her the very best of luck with representing Luxembourg at the Rose of Tralee.

LuxGAA launches Sports Prophet League

What is Sports Prophet

Sports Prophet is an Irish owned sports prediction website which facilitates fundraising for clubs.
Competition leagues are set up and points rewards for correct predictions.
Entry into the Lux GAA league is open to anyone, members and non-members alike.

The concept is simple

You predict the winners of various sporting events during the 2012 calendar year (GAA, Rugby, Soccer, Golf etc). Points are awarded to each entrant for every question they predict correctly. However if their particular choice for that question only comes second or third or reaches a final or semi-final etc you may still earn some points (The exact points available for each question can be seen on the prediction sheets).

Costs / Prizes

Entry is a mere €20, and you are not limited to how many times you can enter.
The prizes are as follows: (1st) €300, (2nd) €150, (3rd) €100, (4th) €50 and (5th) €25 within the Lux GAA club competition. You can also win your choice of either 2 All-Ireland Hurling or Football tickets if you finish top of the Overall Player Leaderboard on SportsProphet.ie.
