Men’s Football progress into Semis

Luxembourg’s Gaelic footballers returned victorious from the first round of the European Gaelic Football Championship in Maastricht on Saturday.

The game between mainland Europe’s oldest club, Gaelic Sports Club Luxembourg and a side made up of players from clubs in den Haag, Eindhoven and Maastricht, was a close and entertaining match.

In the end, Luxembourg beat the combined Dutch team by two points with a score of 2 – 7 to 3 – 2 (in Gaelic Games a goal is worth three points).

Gaelic football matches in Europe are typically played on modified soccer or rugby pitches and have 11-man sides due to the smaller dimensions. The municipal authorities in Maastricht have built an all-weather, full-sized Gaelic Football pitch allowing Saturday’s game to be played in the same way as matches in Ireland with 15-men a side.

The weather was also familiar to the Irish players, with a grey cloudy sky and a swirling wind that kept the score low. Luxembourg travelled with a large and experienced squad. The team have been training hard all summer in Stade Michel Wagner and played very well.

Luxembourg will return to Maastricht on September 28 to play the Guernsey Gaels from the Channel Islands in the European semi-final. The finals will take place the next morning.

Hurling Championship Round 1: Paris

Aaron Prendergast rallies the troops under close attention of local media.

The 2013 European hurling season sees Luxembourg get off to an excellent start, contesting their first final in many years but ultimately finishing runners-up in Paris at the weekend.
It was a valiant effort with many debutantes shining throughout the tournament. Our resident South African, Michael Scott, also picked up the ‘most promising player’ award.
