After a long nine year wait, Luxembourg’s senior men’s Gaelic Football team were last Saturday crowned European men’s senior football champions in Maastricht.

Having won the first round in Munich in July, the local side travelled to Maastricht as favourites to win the title.

The team started the day against a strong Amsterdam team and a very impressive first half performace was enough to see it through on a scoreline of 2-6 to 2-2.

Next up was Paris who started much the better in the first half but Luxembourg’s strong bench and experience was enough to pull ahead in the second half to win by 4-9 to 2-5.

The semi final against Belgium was a loaded game with high stakes as a win for Luxembourg would secure the european title on points.

It was a titanic battle and the Luxembourg team withstood a late onslaught by Belgium to win on a scoreline of 3-4 to 2-5.

In the final, they faced Jersey and Luxembourg’s large panel and fitness shone through to win by 2-8 to 1-3.

Among the notable performaces on the day were those from Steve Early dominating midfield and James Hassan and Rossa Kelleher showing their class in the forward line.

Luxembourg’s captain Brendan O Callaghan, who has tirelessly served the club over the years, ends his Luxembourg career on a high before his move stateside accepted the trophy on behalf of a delighted Luxembourg team.

Well done to both our football teams who traveled to Munich last weekend to compete in the first round of the pan European football championships, our ladies team merged with Holland and put in a great display to finish in 4th place. The girls won both of their group games comfortably against Munich and Belgium B before losing out to an excellent Belgium A team in the semi.
This put our girls in a playoff against Berlin which they were very unlucky to lose by the narrowest of margins.
A fine display by all involved and lots of positives to take into the last round of the Pan European championships.
Special mention has to go to Emma Cuddy who put in a blinder of a display both in goals and outfield.

Our mens team went on to win the tournament. After coming through a difficult group of Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Frankfurt our lads faced Belgium in the semi where an excellent 2nd half display saw us through to a final against Augsberg which was won by a point in extra time.Well done to Axel Ntumba who picked up a well deserved player of the tournament award. Special mention also goes to James Hasson whos personal tally of 4-16 for the day also saw him as one of the standout performers. All roads now lead to Maastricht on the 24th of September where we look to seal the European championship for the first time since 2007.

The Gaelic Sports Club Luxembourg are very pleased to announce that we will be setting up ‘Club na nÓg Luxembourg’ (Gaelic Games for Children) with the aim of bringing Gaelic Games to kids in Luxembourg again in a fun and friendly way.

Our first mission as Club na nÓg Lux will be to provide 10 weeks of fun training for 4-14 year olds for one hour on Sunday afternoons starting the week following the Luxembourg Hurling and Camogie Tournament.

Dates: April 24– July 3, 2016
Time: 14.00– 15.00
Location: Stade Michel Wagner, Weimerskirch (Directions)
The pitch can be reached by Bus Ligne 8 (Stop: St. Vith)
Age Group: 4-14 years old (split into age appropriate groupings)

Please let any parents who might be interested in having their children learn basic Gaelic Football and Hurling/Camogie skills know about this.

We would ask that parents remain at the pitch for the duration of the training session. There will be teas/coffees available for parents in the clubhouse while they wait for the children.

If you are interested in having your child or your children attend all or some of the sessions please register here.

In addition, the training team would appreciate hearing from any parents who are willing to assist with helping out at each training session. Obviously the more volunteers the more enjoyable the training for the children. You can also register your willingness to give a hand at the same link as above or by emailing us.

It would be great if you can please dress the children in comfortable sports clothing and apply sun cream when required.

Don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions in the meantime. Email us at kids@ClubnanOg.lu.

Luxembourg’s gaelic sportsmen and women made a titanic effort when their club hosted a Hurling and Camogie tournament last weekend, with both the men and women’s teams finishing third.

The Gaelic sports club welcomed teams from across northern Europe when it hosted round 1 of the European Hurling and Camogie Championships at Jos Becker stadium on Saturday.

Luxembourg’s men started well with a comfortable win over Darmstadt (Luxembourg 8-18 to Darmstadt 0-00) but fell short against a stronger Belgium A team (Luxembourg 1-6 Belgium 3-15) , who ultimately won the tournament.

Luxembourg’s men put in a titanic effort in what was a gripping semi final against Amsterdam, but came up short (Luxembour 4-11 Amsterdam 6-8). They finally found a comfortable win in the third/fourth place playoff against Belgium B (Luxembourg 6-11 Belgium B 1-0), finishing the day on a high note.

Belgium A team came out overall winners in the Hurling, beating Amsterdam in the final (Belgium A 4-22 to Amsterdam 1-6).

Luxembourg finishes third for Camogie

Luxembourg’s Camogie team, dubbed “The Luxembirds”, did extremely well considering the newness and lack of experience of the team.

After a loss against Holland (Luxembourg 0-1 Holland 5-6) and then Belgium A (Luxembourg 0-0 Belgium A 2-7), theys came together for an excellent display of team work in the final, the third/fourth place playoff against Belgium B (Luxembourg 2-2 Belgium B 5-1 ), which they won. Holland seized the title for Camogie.

Players of the tournament were awarded to Belgian players Maedhbh Bolger for Camogie, and Brendan O’Donoghue in Hurling.
